UNITED MACHINING is continuously improving the energy efficiency of its machines, with the goal of helping our customers to reduce their indirect emissions and energy costs.

Energy consumption

The energy consumption of our machines has been reduced by up to 40% over the last 5 years. This was done through several programs, including the following:

  • The Econowatt system enables our machines to significantly reduce their energy consumption during standby mode without compromising machine readiness and precision. Energy is not wasted during non-productive time.
  • Fitting of energy-efficient injection pumps reduce the overall energy consumption of the machine.
  • Intelligent power generators allow the digital and fast control of each spark, improving the machine's electrical efficiency.

These improvements support our customers' cost-efficiency and reduce our downstream greenhouse gas emissions. These emissions, associated with the operation of our products, are part of Scope 3 emissions according to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.

Our suppliers are all required to comply to REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals), Conflict minerals and RoHS (Restrictions of Hazardous Substances) regulations. 

We check our suppliers' sustainability performance and plan to help them improve it.

New technologies

We continuously research and develop new technologies having lower environmental footprints.

Our Laser Texturing technology is a cleaner and faster alternative to chemical etching, and can be used on any type of material. The environmental advantages are:

  • reduced pollution: there is no need for chemical agents
  • less energy: the manufacturing process requires less time and steps
  • less waste: a fully digital and perfectly repeatable process generates less scrap

How we achieve our goals

CUT F series

Electrical cabinet

Improvement of the cooling system by replacing the 400 VAC fan with a 24 VDC speed-controlled fan. Introduction of intelligent power generators (IPG) and use of most recent electrical components which are state of the art in term of energy efficiency.

EDM technology

General process time reduction due to improvements given by the IPG on EDM technology especially in complex machining.

Hydraulic pumps

The use of more energy-efficienct pumps reduces the overall energy consumption.

The latest generation of UNITED MACHINING’ Intelligent Power Generators (IPG) allows a digital and fast control of each spark, therefore improving the machine’s electrical efficiency.

IPG – Reduced energy waste

Thanks to its resonant switching mode, IPG contributes to reducing the waste of energy.

IPG – Reduced component wear

IPG reduces wear on components during the whole product’s lifecycle.

This smart module enables an energy-saving standby mode and programmable fast reactivation “wake up” option. No energy is wasted during non-productive time and every morning equipment is prepared and ready to carry out the requested tasks.

Injection pumps – Higher energy efficiency

The use of injection pumps instead of high-pressure pumps reduces the energy consumption.

CUT X series

Electrical cabinet

Improvement of the cooling system by replacing the 400 VAC fan with a 24 VDC speed-controlled fan. Introduction of a high-efficiency Beckoff driver to improve the overall energy efficiency.

EDM technology

Time reduction during the main cut thanks to improvements on the EDM technology, especially for complex machining.

Thermal stability

The use of pumps is needed for the regulation of the dielectric temperature and the prevention of the deformation of the machine and electrode. Our new pumps enable producing parts with significant higher accuracy from the very start, without waiting for the machine to warm up.

LASER P series

Compressed air

Compressed air consumption of the machine is optimized to minimize the flow rate.

Electrical cabinet cooling

Additional thermostats allow activating the electrical cabinet heat exchangers only when needed.

Water-water chiller

Optional water-cooled refrigeration for Femto lasers sources permit decreasing the machine energy consumption.

MILL P and MILL S/X series

New control generation

The change to a new CNC, Heidenhain TNC 640, improves the control efficiency.

Highly efficient exhauster system

The implementation of a Venturi nozzle in the exhauster system helps to significantly reduce the compressed air usage.

Design

Several design changes, such as switching to LED lights, also help improve the energy efficiency.

ITC – Intelligent Temperature Control

The continuous improvements made on this software help compensating temperature fluctuations and also significantly increase the already improved precision of the new generation of Milling machines.

Liechti g-Mill 1000

Direct drive

One of the main innovations to generate energy savings on the g-Mill 1000 was to fit 4 direct drives on the A, B, CY and X axes, instead of only 2 direct axes on the previous generation. Thanks to this most complete configuration, the g-Mill 1000 has a more dynamic behavior during part machining. This allows the g-Mill 1000 to produce parts faster and results in less time consumption per part for the whole production phase.

Rotary linear drive kinematics (ROLANT)

Unique in the world, the rotary linear drive kinematics, also known as ROLANT kinematics, is a major breakthrough machine concept. It combines the C and Y axes in a rotary CY axis, making it faster to move and machine. The torque motor is able to handle more energy. This leads to a more compact design with higher dynamics and a smoother movement of the spindle around the part. Ultimately the consumption per part is also reduced.
